2023 marks Thomas Hanson’s third year as Head Football Coach at South Cobb High School. He brings 25 years of coaching experience from South Carolina, Georgia, and Maryland. Coach Hanson came to South Cobb after working under Matt Dickmann at Harrison, where he helped win the 2019 AAAAAA State Championship. Prior to Harrison, Coach Hanson worked at Marietta coaching defensive line and linebackers. Before returning to Georgia, he worked under Maryland Hall of Fame Coach, Steve Turnbaugh, at Hereford High School in Baltimore, Maryland, for 9 years. There, he served as defensive coordinator for 5 years. Prior to his tenure at Hereford, he worked at Lee County High School near Albany, Georgia, where he coached defensive backs, and at Clarke Central High School in Athens, Georgia, where he coached running backs.
Prior to entering the coaching and teaching profession, Coach Hanson graduated from Wofford College and received his master’s degree from the University of South Carolina. Three years ago, he received his specialist degree from Valdosta State University.
In his free time, Coach Hanson enjoys working out and spending time with his family. His lovely wife, Elizabeth, teaches AP French at the Westminster Schools in Buckhead. They have 2 beautiful daughters, Carolina and Camille. Carolina is currently a 11th grader at Marietta High School, and Camille (not pictured) is currently a 8th grader at Whitefield Academy.
